VIDEO: Visit, Eat and Learn: Mixon Fruit Farms

by Carrie McLaren with no comments

A big part of traveling is learning about the places you visit together as a family. And as a native Floridian, it was important to me that my children have the opportunity to visit a citrus farm. During one of my last videos as the VISIT FLORIDA Family Insider, we visited Mixon Fruit Farms in Bradenton.

Mixon’s offers families a unique way to add in some education and discover how farmers bring citrus to the dinner table.

A Look Inside Mixon Fruit Farms

Climb aboard the Mixon Orange Blossom Express tram and take a guided tour through the citrus groves. The one-hour tour takes visitors through the growing process from start to finish and concludes with tasty, free samples in the gift shop.

From the growing techniques to the harvesting methods, guides tell the stories of the Mixon family and how they’ve been growing citrus on their land for more than 75 years. And the tour includes more than just oranges and grapefruits, during our visit we learned about exotic fruits too. It was definitely a great learning experience.

Along the tour, visitors also get a glimpse of the wildlife conservation efforts at the farm. From a crocodile to bobcats and birds – the farm has become a haven for injured and orphaned animals, providing them with a safe place to recuperate and in some cases, live permanently too.

Taste the Treats

And the end of the tour, take time to explore the Mixon Family Farms market store. From free juice samples to fun gifts, there are plenty of fun souvenirs to remember your visit to the farm.

And don’t miss trying their legendary orange ice cream. This ice cream is made with juices directly from the Mixon Farms. Whether you choose all orange or opt for the orange swirl, this delicious treat is the perfect way to cool off after a day at the farm. Mixon’s Groveside Cafe, inside the gift shop also serves breakfast and lunch too.
