Summer Fun: Follow Along on Our Upcoming Road Trip

by Carrie McLaren with no comments

When telling friends and family that my family and I are soon departing on a two-week, road trip – most people tell me I’m crazy.

With two kids (ages 7 and 8) in tow, maybe we are a bit crazy, but it is sure to be an adventure. And really, that’s what summertime is all about – memories and having fun together as a family.

My husband and I have talked a lot the last few months about traveling to Pittsburgh to see his family, so that’s exactly what we’re doing — and we’ve decided to take two weeks to make the roundtrip journey from Florida.

So, here’s a look at where we’re headed this summer –

Asheville, North Carolina

I went to college near Asheville and it has been years since my last visit. This time, I’m excited to return with my entire family and introduce my kids to this vibrant city. Tops on my ‘must do’ list is going to the Shindig on the Green featuring live, old-time music and dancing. This is the 51st year of the free event, held Saturday nights from July to Labor Day weekend.

And yep, there’s adventure involved too, we are set to explore the Treetops at the Asheville Adventure Center, complete with KidZip – ziplining for kids and learning more about the area at the Western North Carolina Nature Center!  (Super shout out to the Asheville CVB for hosting us while in the area!)

Indianapolis, Indiana

I’ll be crossing off another state on my list when we visit my husband’s best friend and family in Indianapolis. And as luck as it, we’ll be there for our friend’s birthday, so I’m sure it is going to be an extra special celebration!

Our friends also have two girls about the same age as mine, so I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of giggles and playing during the few days we are in town. I’m excited to check out the city and ‘live like a local’ for a few days.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

We’ll be visiting family during our time in Pittsburgh and once again, we will be ‘living like a local’. I’m excited to explore some local restaurants and maybe even try a pierogi while we are there too. (Any pierogi recommendations? Let me know!)

When I last visited the city in 2008, my husband and I hopped aboard a cable car to see the magnificent views along the Duquesne Incline on Mount Washington. Definitely an experience you can’t just do anywhere else and the photo opportunities at the top will be worth the adventure!

National Harbor, Maryland

During our few nights in the Washington, DC area, we plan to call the National Harbor area our ‘home away from home’. Located along the Potomac River, I’m excited to leave the car behind for a few days and explore the area by foot, by boat — and ferris wheel!

This will be our first visit to this area, a ‘new to us’ adventure for each of us! While they are sold out during our stop (boo!), I’m excited to stop by the Gaylord National Resort to see the sights – they have a nighttime fountain show that looks incredible. The Capital Wheel at National Harbor is on our ‘to do’ list – I bet the views are incredible from way up there!

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

While I am excited about each stop on our ginormous road trip, I am especially excited to visit The Carolina Opry to see their newest show, Thunder and Light starring the clogging group All That! and illusionists The Wagsters.

I’m proud to call a few the guys from All That! my friends, we used to dance together back in our college days. They’ve done amazing things, like coming in as runner-up on NBC’s America’s Got Talent and I’ve been talking for years about going to see their show — I’m excited to see them on stage again!

Savannah, Georgia

Maggie recently mentioned that she’d always wanted to go to Georgia (oh, to be eight years old again), so the final stop on our visit before we get home is Savannah. While I’ve been there many times, we’ve never gone as a family – so I’m excited to explore some kid-friendly places during our stay!

The historic district in Downtown is perfect for exploring on foot – there are tons of great, local shops and we are even going to visit Paula Deen’s original Lady & Sons restaurant too. Southern food seems like the perfect way to end our summer vacation!
