My hometown, Jacksonville, Florida has quickly made a name for itself for fantastic dining experiences and restaurants. Based in Philadelphia, Chef Kevin Sbraga, winner of Top Chef season 7 winner is the latest to make his way to Northeast Florida.
Sbraga & Company opened this past weekend at Unity Plaza in Jacksonville’s Riverside/Brooklyn neighborhood.
My husband and I were lucky enough to scoop up a reservation for opening night and even managed to snag a seat at the Kitchen Bar – we were practically sitting in the kitchen – and it was fantastic.
There’s something special about watching chefs in action, especially with Chef Kevin Sbraga running the show. It was a night filled with amazing food, great wine and outstanding service.
Let’s Talk About the Food
The menu features regionally sourced meats, seafood, vegetables and grains highlighting Northeast Florida within each dish. From oysters to pork belly, fried catfish, hominy grits and more – it’s a Southern gal’s dream menu and trust me when I tell you that we ordered a lot of food!
Some of the standout dishes included the Fish Fry entree with boiled shrimp, shaved catfish, hushpuppies and two crab cakes. The melon with goat cheese and almond granola (pictured above) was a dish I was unsure about when we ordered it, but it quickly became a favorite too.
My other favorites included the potatoes with whipped buttermilk ricotta and pickled onions. Who knew a side dish could be so simple, yet so beautifully plated too. The ‘hog and hominy’ with pork belly and cheese grits was another dish where I found myself scraping the plate.
Things to Know About Sbraga & Company
The Sbraga & Company menu is made up of shareable plates and that’s exactly how we tackled all the great food. We ordered a few starters, a few items from the raw bar, one entree to share and then two desserts.
From my understanding, the menu will change with the seasons. All breads are made in-house (be sure to look in on the separate bread kitchen while you are there!)
As far as seating, there are typical tables, a community table, seating is available at the raw bar and my new favorite spot – the kitchen bar features 12 seats. While they can’t guarantee availability, I can’t say enough great things about the Kitchen Bar – it is a fantastic experience. If you have a preference in seating, just let them know when you arrive at the restaurant.
And whatever you do – make sure you save room for dessert. The peanut butter banana pudding left me scraping the plate clean, check out the ‘before’ picture below. My husband’s apple streusel was a hearty dessert served with olive oil ice cream (don’t knock it until you try it – so good!).
