Disney Diary: Haircuts and Smiles at Harmony Barber Shop

When planning a trip to Magic Kingdom Park, the first thing my girls always ask to do is visit the Harmony Barber Shop on Main Street U.S.A. for haircuts. That’s right, not see Mickey Mouse or take a ride on Dumbo — they want a sprinkle of free pixie dust and a new hair do.

So, days before our last visit I saw online that our favorite barber – Michal would be retiring soon and his last day would actually be when we were at the Magic Kingdom. Haircuts were meant to be for this trip!

Harmony Barber Shop 2013

Harmony Barber Shop only takes reservations over the phone, but they do accept walk-ups. With advanced reservations booked for Michal’s last day, I knew we’d have to get there when the park opened that day.

Since we got their bright and early, we were one of the first walk-ups in the door and both of the girls got haircuts that morning. Molly had Michal as her barber one last time and I did my best to hold back the tears. He did Maggie’s first haircut way back in 2011 and it was so special that we said ‘so long’ as he cut Molly’s hair one last time.

He’s always been so kind and patient with my girls, I was grateful we had a few minutes to say thanks, wish him well and snag one last picture.

Harmony Barber Shop Haircuts

It is funny to tell people that haircuts at Magic Kingdom Park is special for our family, but it is true. My girls both had their first haircuts at the park, Mary Poppins once stopped in to say hello to the girls and we’ve watched the parades many times from right outside the barber shop – fantastic views!

Moments like these are what make Walt Disney World special to my family. Sure, we love the rides, meeting characters and fireworks, but the smaller experiences and details are what keep us returning again and again.

Want to Visit Harmony Barber Shop?

The Harmony Barber Shop is located next to Town Hall on Main Street U.S.A. As you enter the Magic Kingdom, it is in the far left corner in the Town Square near the Fire Station.

If it is your child’s first haircut, you’ll receive a special set of Mickey Mouse ears that say ‘Baby’s 1st Haircut” on them, a certificate and of course, a little snip of hair for a keepsake.

As of February 2017, haircuts are $18 for children age 12 and under; $19 for adults. The ‘My First Haircut’ package is $25. And if you don’t need a cut, stop in for a quick sprinkle of Pixie Dust – for free!

While walk-ups are on a first-come, first-serve basis, reservations are accepted 180 days in advanced by calling (407) 939-7529.

We had my first haircut here when I was 8 months old. They actually did not have any reservations available for my whole trip but we had no problems walking up and getting in right away the first time we tried. They told us that they only take something like 20 reservations a day so if you don’t get a reservation, they usually can accomodate you as a walkin.
