Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the Carnival Horizon naming ceremony and celebration in New York City. And in true Carnival Cruise Line fashion, there was a party filled with fun.
With Carnival Horizon godmother Queen Latifah presiding over the ship’s naming ceremony, the celebration also included an epic Lip Sync Battle with the Queen herself going up against Philadelphia Eagles kicker Jake Elliott along with a beautiful tribute to the patients at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Here’s a look at the festivities –
The Godmother Has Arrived
After a few hours of exploring the ship (aka running around trying to take as many pictures as possible), we made our way to the main atrium for the start of the day’s festivities.
Held inside Carnival Horizon’s main atrium, the ship’s naming ceremony featured Queen Latifah being named the official godmother of the ship by Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy.
There’s a lot of tradition and superstitions that go into a naming ceremony and it is so fantastic to see the ship’s crew members be involved in the festivities. There was so much excitement!
The highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling of artwork from 33 patients of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital on the atrium’s LED Dreamscape sculpture. There were children from St. Jude on-hand at the ceremony and it was such an honor to recognize them and see their art come to life.
And this artwork wasn’t just a one-time event – it will be there for every sailing. So, if you have plans to sail on Carnival Horizon – be on the lookout for it!
Since 2010, Carnival Cruise Line and guests have come together to donate $16 million to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with a goal of $20 million by the year 2020. During the day’s festivities, Carnival donated another $100,000 to the cause! (Also, check out my story on ways to support St. Jude on your next cruise.)
Time for a Lip Sync Battle
Once the official business was out of the way, it was time for fun as we made our way to the Liquid Lounge for the Lip Sync Battle: Carnival featuring Queen Latifah and Philadelphia Eagles kicker Jake Elliott. And what a fun surprise it was to see President Christine Duffy and Carnival Corporation CEO Arnold Donald join in on the fun too.
And poor Jake Elliott didn’t stand a chance against Queen Latifah. She took the crown with her lip sync rendition of ‘It’s Raining Men’ – with the Playlist Production performers as her backup dancers.
It was a great way to kick off the celebration — and I can’t wait until my next sailing as Lip Sync Battle:Carnival shows now take place on most ships.
Time to Party!
And after the festivities, it was time for dinner… and a chance to sit down! While the dining room was open for service (and chocolate melting cake!), I opted for a quiet dinner for one on the back of the ship for some fish and chips at the Seafood Shack.
From there, it was time to party! Carnival Cruise Line is the master at parties and with DJ Irie spinning tunes on the Lido deck, I grabbed a glass of wine and made my way down to the Lido deck for a seat to people watch and a view of the New York City skyline. (Did you know the Empire State Building’s lights now sparkles at the top of each hour?!)
It was a day filled with festivities celebrating this magnificent, new ship. Just two years ago, I was in an Italian shipyard watching this ship, still under construction, enter the waters for the first time.
Following along with the progress of this ship was truly special and I’m thankful to have had the experience to take part in such an honored ceremony. And I’m ready to set sail again soon – summertime can’t get here soon enough!
