I had the weekend marked down in my calendar for months. A weekend with zero plans, time with my family and sprinkled with a bit of pampering too. And as soon as we picked up Molly from summer camp last Friday, we made a beeline for the Waldorf Astoria Orlando for a weekend of fun surrounding their SummerBlast festivities.
Taking place weekends now through September 2nd, the SummerBlast festivities take place at both the Waldorf Astoria Orlando and its sister property, the adjacent Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek — and we made the most of our weekend stay!
Sushi, Minions and Sunsets to Start the Weekend
Thanks to our camp schedule, we arrived a bit too late for the complimentary, Friday afternoon champagne at check-in and the Weird Science ice cream station for kids featuring liquid nitrogen (!!), but what a great way to welcome guests to the property and kick-off the weekend.
Instead, we made our way over to the adjacent Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek for a late dinner at ZETA Asia – featuring sushi and a great kids menu that also has chicken fingers and French fries (if you’ve got picky eaters in your family like I do).
Another bonus, guests of both properties have full use of amenities at both properties, including charging straight to your room. Easy and seamless.
From there, we made our way out to the Hilton’s pool (complete with a lazy river!!) for the dive-in movie. Maggie instantly noticed that the Despicable Me movie on the screen matched the yellow inner tubes making their way around the lazy river. Not sure if it was planned, but we loved it!
But if I’m being honest, what really captured my attention during the movie… this view! Even the sunsets are amazing at SummerBlast. I couldn’t get out of the pool fast enough to grab my camera. What a way to end the night!
Saturday at the Pool
The girls had us up bright and early on Saturday morning – partly because it was Molly’s birthday (more on that for another upcoming post!) and partially because they were ready for a day of fun at the pool! So, after a ginormous breakfast at Oscar’s (go with the breakfast buffet!), we made our way to the pool — ready to spend the whole day there.
The amazing folks at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando hooked us up with a poolside cabana for the day – lounge chairs, a couch, a refrigerator, ceiling fan, a television, cabana attendants for placing food and drink orders, complimentary sodas, water and a fruit tray are included with cabana rentals. Spoiled rotten is the best way I know to explain it. (I’ll share a more detailed post about our cabana life soon!)
The Waldorf Astoria Orlando has two pools, with one of them having a zero-entry — such a nice feature for families with little ones and those with mobility issues. The weather was perfect and in between swimming, we played the yard games with ping-pong tables, Jenga blocks, a massive Connect 4 game and even remote control race cars available for families.
And I may have been just a bit selfish and let my husband and the girls make their way next door to the Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek for some lazy river time while I had some quiet time by the pool. Maggie reported back to me that there was a live DJ spinning tunes and poolside games — easy walk between the two hotels!
Back at the Waldorf Astoria, we grabbed a bite to eat at the poolside Aquamarine restaurant – pool attendants are in the area to take food and drink orders and will deliver right to your chair. My husband watched World Cup matches on the television, Maggie spent some time reading and Molly and I splashed in the pool. Truly a perfect afternoon.
After dinner, the girls talked us into ‘one last swim’… I opted for a glass of wine poolside to end my day. And once again that sunset did not disappoint! We played some poolside games and I began to wonder who might fall asleep first — myself or the kids.
I felt bad we ran out of time for my husband to take advantage of the family golf experiences, although he admitted he was enjoying the pool too much!
Don’t Miss the Indoor Activities Too!
There’s plenty of indoor fun for the SummerBlast festivities too.
It was hard to pass the Bar du Chocolat without stopping featuring a la carte chocolate treats for purchase along with champagne and wine pairings. It was quite a sight – each piece looked like artwork! Champagne and chocolate, the ultimate nightcap.
On Sunday afternoons, the Waldorf Astoria hosts a Royal Tea with sandwiches, pastries, hot tea and live piano entertainment. They were setting up in the Peacock Lounge as we were checking out and I had to snap a picture of this beautiful teacup.
Our stay at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando was a much-needed family day with no agenda, yet filled with fun Summerblast activities. On the drive home, Maggie asked when we go could back again this summer to catch more of the fun activities.
