It is an exciting week for cruise fans and Carnival Cruise Line — the new Carnival Horizon sets sail on its maiden voyage April 2, 2018!
I’ve been stalking social media and online news channels for the latest about this new ship and it looks like there are some pretty fantastic, new additions to this ship. I’ll have the opportunity to visit the ship later this May in New York City and I’m so excited to experience them in person soon!
Now, before we take a look at what to expect from this new ship, let’s take a quick look at the upcoming itineraries and homeports for the Carnival Horizon. Whether you’re traveling to Europe, New York City or waiting to sail out of Miami in the Fall, you are going to experience a great ship.
Here’s a look at upcoming sailings –
Carnival Horizon 2018 Itineraries
With a 13-day Mediterranean voyage operating round-trip from Barcelona and calling at Livorno, Rome (Civitavecchia), and Naples (Capri and Pompeii), Italy; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Corfu, Greece; Messina (Sicily), Italy; Valletta, Malta; and Cagliari (Sardinia), Italy – the first of four round-trip departures from this Spanish port.
The ship makes its way to New York City in late May for a series of sailings with eight-day Caribbean cruises throughout the summer season.
From there, the ship will then shift to Miami and kick off a year-round schedule of six- and eight-day Caribbean cruises beginning Sept. 22, 2018.
Here’s a look at what’s new with the Carnival Horizon –
Dr. Seuss-Themed WaterWorks
Located on Deck 12, Carnival Horizon’s Dr. Seuss WaterWorks will offer two distinctly different slides, for young and old. The Cat in the Hat slide will feature an enclosed raft slide offering more than 450 feet of heart-racing twists and turns. The entrance resembles The Cat’s famous red and white hat with the distinctive color pattern carried throughout the slide in alternating translucent and opaque sections.
The Fun Things slide, an enclosed body slide with whimsical polka dots and special lighting effects and named after the mischievous duo Thing 1 and Thing 2 will encompass 213 feet of all-ages fun.
The new Dr. Seuss WaterWorks will also include a 150-gallon tipping bucket patterned after The Cat’s hat, along with a splash zone for little ones and dozens of water spray toys.
Larger-than-life images of famous Dr. Seuss characters – including The Cat in the Hat holding an inner tube, The Grinch sporting a surfboard tucked under his arm, and Thing 1 and Thing 2 frolicking atop their namesake slide – will greet visitors as they enter the park, with memorable Dr. Seuss phrases displayed on clear partitions that surround the facility.
New Craft Beer
Brewed by Carnival’s expert brewmaster, Colin Presby, the new Parched Pig beers are playful takes on the line’s popular ThirstyFrog brews that debuted on Carnival Vista. (Check out my story about the ThirtsyFrog beers found on the Carnival Vista.) These new tastes were created for pairing with the BBQ flavors featured in Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse|Brewhouse.
Here’s the scoop on the four, new beers featured on Carnival Horizon:
- ParchedPig Smoked Porter– brewed with in-house smoked malt, this robust, full-bodied beer offers big and bold flavors and notes of molasses and hickory smoke, providing the perfect complement to Smokehouse|Brewhouse’s BBQ favorites
- ParchedPig Farmhouse Ale– this lightly hopped beer is distinguished by its blond color, fruity and complex character with mild spice notes that balance the brew’s dry finish
- ParchedPig Toasted Amber Ale– highlighted by its rich amber color and notes of toasted caramel and biscuit, this beer is well balanced, smooth and highly drinkable
- ParchedPig West Coast IPA– the embodiment of a traditional West Coast India Pale Ale, this hoppy, intense beer is loaded with bitterness with a bright flavor profile and distinctive aroma of citrus and pine
Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse|Brewhouse
And speaking of the new Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse|Brewhouse, there’s plenty of great barbecue coming to the new Carnival Horizon. This new dining option will offer a free-of-charge self-service BBQ lunch buffet from noon to 2:30 p.m. on embarkation day and sea days and be open every night of the cruise with menu items offered on an a la carte basis along with live music nightly.
Dishes include brisket custom-smoked for 12 hours, Memphis-style baby back ribs, dry-rubbed and grill-finished chicken, pulled pork, and cedar-smoked salmon with an apricot glaze, all cooked “low and slow” using Fieri’s signature rubs and spices.
Side dishes include the Longhorn Cheddar Mac & Cheese, Beer-Braised Cowboy Pinto Beans, Sweet Potato Bourbon Mash, Mashed Potatoes with Red Eye Gravy and Burnt Ends, and Buttermilk Broccoli Salad with Bacon and Almonds.
Bonsai Teppanyaki Dining
And here’s a new dining experience that I’m particularly excited about on the Carnival Horizon — Bonsai Teppanyaki. With entertaining chefs, this new restaurant will feature four different combination dinners including filet mignon/shrimp, shrimp/spiced grilled chicken, filet mignon/teriyaki salmon, and filet mignon/lobster tail. All meals end with a Chocolate Bento Box with Green Tea Ice Cream. All dishes will include fried rice and stir-fried vegetables.
Prices for Bonsai Teppanyaki are on a per-person basis and include all appetizer selections, entrée and dessert. The restaurant will be open for lunch on sea days and for dinner every night of the cruise.
New Playlist Productions
One of my favorite nighttime activities onboard Carnival ships is to see the Playlist Production shows. I was a dancer growing up as a kid, so seeing people perform onstage is something I can relate to and enjoy so much.
Three, new Playlist Productions shows are coming to Carnival Horizon – Soulbound, Celestial Strings and Vintage Pop. A fourth show, Amor Cubano: A Caribbean Dance Romance, has been brought to Carnival Horizon following an incredible debut on Carnival Vista last year.
From soul music to pop songs and a multi-sensory show paired with an orchestra, I’m excited to see these new shows take to the stage soon. In a previous post, I shared an in-depth look at each of the shows including a video sneek peek of what to expect too.
Let’s Go Cruising
The Carnival Horizon will also include favorites from the Carnival Vista including the popular Family Harbor rooms, the Havana area, an IMAX Theater, Camp Ocean and the super fun SkyRide experience.
There’s a lot of excitement surrounding this new ship and with these new additions, I’m anxious to see everything – try the barbecue… and get a beer flight too!
